How to Hide Your Site So You Can Play More
Are you bothered by all those pesky visitors coming to your web site and demanding to buy your goods or services? Do you wish you could hide your site from view so you could get caught up on all your more pressing appointments? If so, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve studied the master developers of stealth web sites and I’m prepared to pass their secrets on to you.
Title Tricks
First of all, since search engines put so much weight on the title of your site, make sure it doesn’t contain any words someone might use when conducting a search for you. Use something clever like “Home Page” or “New Page 2” in your title tag. When someone enters a phrase in a search box, your title won’t match it, so they won’t find you that way!
By the way, don’t confuse the title tag, which is part of the HTML code, with the banner headline on your page. The title only shows up in the top border of the browser window, so although the search engines read it and weigh it heavily, it’s easy for you to miss.
Hide Your Home Page
Next, be sure to keep those keywords that searchers are using off your home page as much as possible. Your best bet is to create a Flash animation for your home page. Search engines can’t read words that are in graphics, so even if you have key words in your Flash movie, they won’t know. While you’re at it, make that movie take a long time to load and don’t give anyone the option of skipping it! You paid a lot of money for that eye candy and you want to get your money’s worth! As an added bonus, a lot of folks will give up before it’s over and will leave your site before entering it.
Don’t Give the Search Engines Any Bait
If your annoying Type A partner insists on a traditional home page, there are several ways to render it useless. Since the search engines are trying to match search words with the words on your page, why not give them a lot of pictures instead? They sure look pretty, so put a lot on your page to take up space. If they’re large and haven’t been optimized for a quick download, you’ll have the added bonus of turning away impatient visitors who think web pages should load quickly. Don’t they realize patience is a virtue?
Use text sparingly.
Fifty or a hundred words should be plenty. Web pages that are found at the top of the search results may have 400-700 words on them. Don’t make that mistake! Besides, it’s way too much work to write that much.
Remain Dense About Density
Search Engines use something called keyword density to see how often the search words show up on a page. It’s calculated by dividing the number of times a search phrase occurs by the total number of words on the page. Each search engine has its own preferred range of keyword density, and your page can be penalized for being too high or too low. Keeping possible search words off your page entirely is of course the best way to remain hidden.
Whatever you do, don’t hire a so-called search engine optimization “expert” who claims to know the optimal keyword density for each of the major engines. They’re just trying to rip you off, and you don’t want to appear on the first page of search results anyway.
Ignore Your Competition
Finally, make sure you never check out the web sites of companies in your industry who rank highly in the search results. You don’t really care how often your search terms show up in their page titles or the headlines and text on their home page. Don’t try to have a similar number of words on your page. And don’t let anyone link to your site from theirs. Always practice safe sites!
Avoid using the free keyword density tool that allows you to compare your site in a side-by-side analysis with a top-ranking competitor. Never click on the “cached” link at the end of Google’s description of a competitor’s site. It will only highlight your search terms on their page, making it easy to see how often they appear. Why look for trouble?
Conclusion
You’ve got lots of things to take care of that are more pressing than dealing with excess customers. Follow these tips and your phone will never ring, email inquiries should drop to zero and you can work on your tan, or catch up on the soaps. As for me, I’m going shopping. See you at the mall!
